Regular Season Round 3: Hitachi Cougars - Aishin AW 68-71 OT

Hitachi Cougars (#10) forced the game against Aishin Wings (#8) into an overtime, but lost by three points 68-71 on Saturday night. The game took place in Hitachinaka. But the guests from Anjo were better at the end. Hitachi Cougars cut a 17-point halftime deficit to tie the game at the end of regular time. But they lost overtime period 10-13. Aishin Wings dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to Hitachi Cougars' 42 and made 39-of-45 free shots (86.7 percent) during the game, while Hitachi Cougars only scored twenty points from the stripe. They outrebounded Hitachi Cougars 101-85 including a 43-32 advantage in defensive rebounds. Aishin Wings shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 70.8 percentage. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Aishin Wings made 229 blocks. It was an exceptional evening for international power forward Evelyn Mawuli (180-95) who led the winners and scored 15 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Koizumi Haruka (164-89) accounted for 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side. Guard Kasumi Takahashi (167-87) came up with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals and Aiko Ishihara (178-92) added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Hitachi Cougars in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Aishin Wings will meet at home Denso Iris in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hitachi Cougars will play against Toyota A. (#7) and hope to get finally their first victory.
