Regular Season Round 9: Groningen - Leiden 70-72

The most exciting game of round 9 in the Eredivisie took place in Groningen. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 6th ranked Groningen (4-4) to first ranked Leiden (7-1) 72-70 on Thursday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The guests trailed by 10 points at the halftime before their 41-29 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Leiden forced 19 Groningen turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international power forward Jeroen van der List (213-89, college: Indian Hills CC, agency: Court Side) who scored 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). American forward Joe Willman (201-91, college: Bucknell) chipped in 17 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Lance Jeter (190-88, college: Nebraska) who recorded 19 points and 4 assists and Canadian power forward Ross Bekkering (203-87) added 12 points and 10 rebounds respectively. Four Groningen players scored in double figures. Leiden maintains first place with 7-1 record, which they share with Den Bosch and Zwolle. Defending champion Groningen dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. Leiden is looking forward to face Leeuwarden (#7) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Groningen will play against Rotterdam and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
