Regular Season Round 7: IR - Grindavik 90-85

Date: November 20, 2014
There was a minor upset when 9th ranked Grindavik (2-5) lost to eleventh ranked IR (2-5) in Reykjavik 85-90 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 18 points after three quarters before their 30-7 charge, which allowed them to win the game. IR dominated on the defensive end, holding Grindavik to just 7 points in fourth quarter. They made 20-of-26 free shots (76.9 percent) during the game. 24 personal fouls committed by Grindavik helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a very good performance for point guard Matthias Sigurdarson (185-94, college: Flagler) who helped to win the game recording 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. American-Jamaican forward Trey Hampton (203-87, college: Georgia St.) contributed with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. The former international forward Omar Saevarsson (198-82) answered with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and international guard Olafur Olafsson (194-90) added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in the effort for Grindavik. Four IR and five Grindavik players scored in double figures. IR moved-up to ninth place, which they share with defeated Grindavik. Grindavik lost third consecutive game. IR is looking forward to face higher ranked Snaefell (#8) in Stykkisholmur in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Grindavik will play at home against the league's second-placed Tindastoll having rather not much hope for a victory.
