The game had a very big importance for third-ranked Bendigo Spirit as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Bendigo Spirit edged second-best Townsville Fire at home 78-75 in overtime. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Townsville Fire. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Townsville Fire won third quarter 16-10. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Townsville Fire used huge pressure winning it 12-11 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 7-10. Strangely Townsville Fire outrebounded Bendigo Spirit 48-31 including a 16-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. American forward Kelsey Griffin (188-87, college: Nebraska) notched 24 points and 9 rebounds to lead the effort and the former international Belinda Snell (180-81) supported her with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Four Bendigo Spirit players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 17 points and 20 rebounds by the former international center Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-80) did not help to save the game for Townsville Fire. Guard Mia Newley (184-88) added 13 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Bendigo Spirit have a solid three-game winning streak. As mentioned above they took over a top position. Townsville Fire at the other side keeps the second place with two games lost. They share the position with Sydney UF. Townsville Fire will play next round against strong West Coast Waves trying to get back on the winning streak. Bendigo Spirit will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Bulleen Boomers at Melbourne.
