There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Rivas Ecopolis (3-6) beat at home 8th ranked Universitario de Ferrol (3-6) 65-61 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 19-14. But Universitario de Ferrol won second period 15-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Rivas Ecopolis won last quarter 21-19. They made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Guard Angela Salvadores (178-97) stepped up and scored 19 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and Serbian power forward Ines Ajanovic (196-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. Four Rivas Ecopolis players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American forward Haley Peters (190-92, college: Duke) with 19 points and the other American import forward Denesha Stallworth (190-92, college: Kentucky) scored 13 points and 9 rebounds. Defending champion moved-up to eighth place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Universitario de Ferrol. Universitario de Ferrol lost their third game in a row. Rivas Ecopolis will meet higher ranked Perfumerias Avenida (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Universitario de Ferrol will play against Gernika (#5) and hope to secure a win.
