Regular Season Round 9: Swords Thunder - DCU Saints 86-84

The most exciting game of round 9 in the Premier League took place in Dublin. This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked DCU Saints (3-5) to third ranked Swords Thunder (5-1) 86-84 on Saturday evening. Swords Thunder dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to DCU Saints' 44. Strangely DCU Saints outrebounded Swords Thunder 44-29 including 30 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Spanish forward Juan Torres (196-92) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American guard Sam Markle (186-90, college: Stonehill) chipped in 22 points and 7 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Markle is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. The best for the losing side was Lithuanian forward Arkadijs Makarenko (185) with a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and international center Martins Provizors (202-87) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Swords Thunder have a solid series of four victories in a row. Newly promoted Swords Thunder maintains third place with 5-1 record having five points less than leader UCC Demons. DCU Saints at the other side keep the sixth position with five games lost. Swords Thunder are looking forward to face Belfast Star (#7) on the road in the next round. DCU Saints will have a break next round.
