Very important is a home loss of first ranked Leiden (11-4) against fifth ranked Groningen (9-4) on Saturday night. Host Leiden was defeated by Groningen in a tough game in Leiden 72-81. The guests were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. Groningen outrebounded Leiden 34-20 including 19 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Mexican forward Mark Sanchez (201-87, college: Boise St., agency: Court Side) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds and American point guard Lance Jeter (190-88, college: Nebraska) who added 14 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists during the contest. Groningen's coach Ivica Skelin allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side international Worthy de Jong (194-88) responded with 17 points and 6 assists and American forward Joe Willman (201-91, college: Bucknell) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Defending champion moved-up to third place. Leiden at the other side still keeps top position with four games lost. Groningen will play against bottom-ranked Amsterdam (#9) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Leiden will have a break next round.
