There was no surprise in Sao Paolo where 12th ranked Unitri (4-9) was crushed by tenth ranked Pinheiros (6-7) 107-86 on Tuesday. The game was mostly controlled by Pinheiros. Unitri was better in third quarter 27-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 23-of-28 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game. Pinheiros forced 24 Unitri turnovers. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. Pinheiros looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Unitri was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American point guard Joe Smith (193-77, college: Al.-Huntsville) who scored 21 points and 5 assists. Lucas Dias Silva (204-95) chipped in 23 points (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!). Pinheiros' coach Marcel de Souza felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward O'Neal Mims (208-83, college: Angelo St.) produced 17 points and 7 rebounds and center Renan Leichtweis (211-89) added 20 points respectively for the guests. Five Pinheiros and four Unitri players scored in double figures. Pinheiros moved-up to ninth place. Unitri lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with nine games lost. Pinheiros will face higher ranked Minas (#3) in Belo Horizonte in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Unitri will play on the road against Palmeiras (#10) in Sao Paulo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
