Regular Season Round 14: Nea Kifisia - Panathinaikos 66-72

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Athens: Panathinaikos (#3) and Nea Kifisia (#8). Nea Kifisia was defeated at home 66-72 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-16. But Nea Kifisia won second period 14-12. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Panathinaikos made 7 blocks. Uruguayan-Spanish power forward Esteban Batista (208-83, agency: Duran International) had a double-double by scoring 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and American-Serbian guard DeMarcus Nelson (193-85, college: Duke) chipped in 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. American Xavier Silas (196-88, college: N.Illinois) responded with 23 points (was perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line !!!) and point guard Nikos Liakopoulos (188-83, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 19 points and 4 assists. Nea Kifisia's coach Ilias Papatheodorou rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Panathinaikos have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion (12-2) moved-up to second place. Nea Kifisia at the other side keeps the eighth position with eight games lost. They share it with Apollon Patras. Panathinaikos are looking forward to face Kolossos (#7) in Rodou in the next round where they are favorite. Nea Kifisia's supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Olympiacos.
