Regular Season Round 17: Taipans - Hawks 63-60

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Cairns Taipans as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Cairns Taipans edged 8th ranked Wollongong Hawks at home 63-60. Wollongong Hawks were trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 9-point lead after three quarters before a 17-5 charge of Cairns Taipans, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Wollongong Hawks to just 5 points in fourth quarter. The best player for the winners was American guard Scottie Wilbekin (188-92, college: Florida) who scored 17 points. The former international power forward Matthew Burston (211-82) chipped in 13 points and 6 rebounds. Cairns Taipans' coach Aaron Fearne used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international swingman Brad Hill (198-86) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 rebounds and international guard Rhys Martin (184-86, college: Nova SE) added 9 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Breakers. Wollongong Hawks at the other side stay dead last with 20 lost games. Wollongong Hawks will play next round against United trying to get back on the winning streak. Cairns Taipans will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Kings in Sydney.
