Second Stage Round 5: Ridzene - Valmiera BSS 80-64

Rather expected game in Riga where 6th ranked Valmiera BSS (1-8) was defeated by third ranked Ridzene (6-2) 80-64 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Ridzene. Valmiera BSS was better in fourth quarter 27-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Ridzene dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Valmiera BSS's 32. Ridzene forced 23 Valmiera BSS turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Guard Roberts Paze (193-95) stepped up and scored 18 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals for the winners and center Guntis Sipolins (206-93) chipped in 17 points and 10 rebounds. Four Ridzene players scored in double figures. Ridzene's coach Aleksandrs Feldmanis allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Ervins Ivanovs (185-96) responded with 32 points, 6 assists and 5 steals and center Janis Kivrins (202-96) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Ridzene. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Livani. Valmiera BSS lost their fifth game in a row. They keep the sixth place with eight games lost. Ridzene will face league's leader Livani at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Valmiera BSS will play against DSN (#5) in Riga and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
