Regular Season Round 18: Guantanamo - Sancti Spiritus 79-80

Important game to mention about took place in Sancti Spiritus. Fourth ranked Sancti Spiritus (12-5) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging one of their biggest challengers Guantanamo (11-5) 80-79 in the game for the third place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Guantanamo. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Guantanamo won fourth quarter 23-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Forward Eilen Gilbert (183-98) notched 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the effort and international Yamara Amargo (179-85) supported her with 24 points. Even a double-double of 31 points and 15 rebounds by international center Clenia Noblet (190-87) did not help to save the game for Guantanamo. The former international swingman Islen Carbonell (181-87) added 16 points, 5 assists and 6 steals. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Guantanamo's coach Osmel Planas rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Sancti Spiritus moved-up to third place. Guantanamo at the other side dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Sancti Spiritus will play against Camaguey (#6) in the next round. Guantanamo will play against Santiago and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
