Regular Season Round 39: Pioneros - Fuerza Regia 102-95

Rather expected game in Cancun where 5th ranked Fuerza Regia (19-16) was defeated by second ranked Pioneros (27-8) 102-95 on Thursday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Fuerza Regia won third quarter 28-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a great shooting night for Pioneros especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. It was a great evening for American-Puerto Rican point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, college: Kansas St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 29 points and 5 assists. American power forward Justin Keenan (202-88, college: Ferris St.) helped adding 21 points and 5 rebounds. Pioneros' coach Manuel Cintron used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was Puerto Rican guard Miguel Ali Berdiel (198-83, college: Valparaiso) with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and American forward Eugene Phelps (198-90, college: Long Beach St.) scored 28 points and 5 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Pioneros have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place with 27-8 record having just three points less than leader Halc.Rojos. Loser Fuerza Regia keeps the fifth position with 16 games lost. Pioneros will meet at home Jefes (#6) in the next round. Fuerza Regia will play against Gigantes in Toluca and hope to secure a win.
