Regular Season Round 16: AEK Athens - Panathinaikos 62-70
Date: February 16, 2015
The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Athens: Panathinaikos (#2) and AEK Athens (#5). AEK Athens was defeated at home 62-70 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of AEK Athens. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 23-11 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Panathinaikos forced 21 AEK Athens turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of Uruguayan-Spanish power forward Esteban Batista (208-83, agency: Duran International) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. American point guard A.J. Slaughter (191-87, college: W.Kentucky, agency: Beo Basket) contributed with 12 points for the winners. British Pops Mensah-Bonsu (206-83, college: G.Washington) replied with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and American swingman Malik Hairston (198-87, college: Oregon) added 12 points in the effort for AEK Athens. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Panathinaikos (14-2) have an impressive five-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains second position behind leader Olympiacos. Newly promoted AEK Athens keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. They share the position with Apollon Patras and AGOR. Panathinaikos are looking forward to face Aiolos Trikallon (#10) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. AEK Athens' supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Athens to the arena Olympiacos.
