Regular Season Round 4: Bucaneros - Marinos 78-70 OT
Date: February 20, 2015
The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Marinos (3-1) in La Guaira on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Bucaneros (2-2) in overtime 78-70. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Marinos won third quarter 21-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Marinos used huge pressure winning it 14-10 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 5-13. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Pete Mickeal (199-78, college: Cincinnati) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds and the other American import forward Robert Hornsby (195-82, college: Troy) who added 19 points during the contest. At the losing side the former international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Paris Global Sports) responded with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and American swingman Aaron Harper (203-81, college: Mississippi) scored 20 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Despite that victory Bucaneros went down to sixth position due to points difference, which they share with Gigantes. Defending champion Marinos dropped to the second place with one game lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. Bucaneros is again looking forward to face higher ranked Marinos (#3) in Puerto La Cruz in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Marinos will have a break next round.
