Marinos (3-1) outlasted Bucaneros (2-2) in overtime by four points 93-89 on Saturday night. The game took place in La Guaira. But the guests from Puerto La Cruz were better at the end. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Bucaneros. The guests were tied at the half and again at the end of regular time. But they managed to win overtime period 14-10. Marinos made 20-of-25 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Bucaneros were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. American swingman Aaron Harper (203-81, college: Mississippi) stepped up and scored 21 points for the winners and the former international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Paris Global Sports) chipped in 7 points, 13 assists and 4 steals. The former international power forward Hector Romero (202-80, college: New Orleans) responded with 21 points and 6 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and the former international guard Jesus Centeno (190-85) scored 17 points and 6 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Five Bucaneros players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending champion moved-up to third place, which they share with Guaiqueries and Trotamundos. Bucaneros at the other side dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. Marinos will face Gaiteros (#8) in Maracaibo in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Bucaneros will play on the road against Panteras in Caracas and hope to win that game.
