Regular Season Round 39: Toyama Grouses - Niigata Albirex 77-80

There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Niigata Albirex (23-14) edged on the road 3rd placed Toyama Grouses (26-11) 80-77 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 80-77. Niigata Albirex made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. American players dominated the game. It was a good game for guard Russell Carter (196-85, college: Notre Dame) who led his team to a victory with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Center Patrick Sullivan (206-88, college: SE Louisiana, agency: Two Points) contributed with 17 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Four Niigata Albirex players scored in double figures. Forward Sam Willard (205-88, college: Pacific) answered with 23 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) and center Joe Werner (201-84, college: Wisc.-La Crosse) added 17 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) in the effort for Toyama Grouses. Niigata Albirex moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sendai 89ers. Loser Toyama Grouses keep the third position with 11 games lost. Niigata Albirex will have a break next round. Toyama Grouses will play again at home against Niigata Albirex and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
