Regular Season Round 9: Toros - Marinos 87-65
Date: March 1, 2015
Round 9 in LPB means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Maracay where host Toros (1-4) crushed league's leader Marinos (5-2) 87-65 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Marinos. The game was mostly controlled by Toros. Marinos managed to win third quarter 22-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Marinos to just 7 points in second quarter. Toros had a 32-21 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American guard Marcus Elliott (191-84, college: Louisiana Tech) who scored 22 points and 6 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). His fellow American import power forward Anthony Laveal Johnson (203-88, college: Fairfield) chipped in 17 points and 7 rebounds. Five Toros players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was naturalized Puerto Rican guard Raul Orta (196-85) who recorded 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and the former international center Jose Juan Bravo (202-86) added 10 points respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Toros maintains eighth place with 1-4 record. Defending champion Marinos dropped to the third position with two games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Bucaneros. Marinos will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Toros will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Marinos in Puerto La Cruz.
