Regular Season Round 40: Toyama Grouses - Niigata Albirex 71-82

There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Niigata Albirex (24-14) defeated on the road one of their biggest challengers Toyama Grouses (26-12) 82-71 on Sunday. The guests trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 82-71. It was a great shooting night for Niigata Albirex especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Thomas Kennedy (201-87, college: Detroit Mercy) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and the other American import forward Stephan Van Treese (206-90, college: Louisville, agency: Two Points) who added 12 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. Niigata Albirex's coach Fujitaka Hiraoka used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side Joho Masashi (183-82) responded with 25 points and American center Joe Werner (201-84, college: Wisc.-La Crosse) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds. Niigata Albirex have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sendai 89ers. Loser Toyama Grouses keep the third position with 12 games lost. Niigata Albirex will face Gunma (#7) at home in the next round. Toyama Grouses will play against Aomori Watts (#6) and hope to win that game.
