Regular Season Round 19: Aris - Koroivos 80-59

Very expected game when 11th ranked Koroivos (6-13) was smashed by fourth ranked Aris (13-6) in Thessaloniki 80-59 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 4 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 80-59. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Aris made 7 blocks. It was an exceptional evening for Cypriot-Bulgarian Aleksandar Vezenkov (206-95) who led the winners and scored 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). American point guard Torey Thomas (180-85, college: Holy Cross) accounted for 7 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. American point guard Timothy Bowers (188-82, college: Mississippi St.) came up with 17 points and 7 rebounds and the other American import guard Josh Magette (185-89, college: Al.-Huntsville) added 5 points and 6 assists respectively for Koroivos in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Aris. They moved-up to third place, which they share with PAOK. Newly promoted Koroivos dropped to the twelfth position with 13 games lost. Aris will meet Kolossos (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Koroivos will play against Panionios (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
