Regular Season Round 20: Valur - KFI 94-92

Seventh-ranked KFI (3-14) gave a tough game to fourth ranked Valur (11-7) in Reykjavik. Valur managed to secure only two-point victory 94-92. However their fans expected easier game. The hosts were already 17 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 36-21 KFI's run in the last quarter cut the lead to 94-92 at the end of the game. Valur players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by KFI's players. The winners were led by American point guard Nate Garth (188-89, college: UCSB) who scored that evening 23 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists and guard Benedikt Blondal (188-93) supported him with 14 points and 7 assists. Five Valur players scored in double figures. Valur's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even 42 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds (was perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line !!!) by Serbian swingman Nebojsa Knezevic (196-87) did not help to save the game for KFI. Center Birgir Petursson (205-86) added 30 points and 13 rebounds for the guests. Valur have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 11-7 record, which they share with IA. KFI lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with 14 games lost. Valur will play against Breidablik (#6) in Kopavogur in the next round. KFI will play at home against the league's second-placed Hamar and hopes to get back on the winning track.
