Tenth-ranked Gran Canaria (7-16) gave a tough game to second ranked Argon Uni Girona (20-3) in Las Palmas on Wednesday. The visitors from Girona managed to secure only one-point victory 76-75. However their fans expected much easier game. Gran Canaria was tied after three quarters and then recorded another tie at the end of regular time. They were eventually defeated in overtime 5-3. They outrebounded Gran Canaria 47-29 including 17 on the offensive glass. It was a great evening for Nigerian-American Ify Ibekwe (187-89, college: Arizona, agency: LBM Management) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jamaican power forward Vanessa Gidden (192-85, college: Hofstra, agency: Josep and Nicolas) helped adding 14 points and 14 rebounds. American forward Samarie Walker (185, college: Kentucky) responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import guard Robyn Parks (183-92, college: VCU) scored 26 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Argon Uni Girona have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 20-3 record behind leader Perfumerias. Gran Canaria at the other side dropped to the eleventh position with 16 games lost. Argon Uni Girona will face Cadi La Seu (#4) in Seu D'urgell in the next round. Gran Canaria will play on the road against Gipuzkoa UPV (#9) in San Sebastian and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
