There was no surprise when 14th ranked Azpeitia (7-18) was defeated on the road by sixth ranked Meridiano Alicante (15-10) 77-64 on Sunday. The game without a history. Meridiano Alicante led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Meridiano Alicante outrebounded Azpeitia 37-21 including 27 on the defensive glass. Azpeitia was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was Cameroonian center Johan Kody (207-93) who scored 17 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). Swingman Javier Marin (194-86) chipped in 8 points and 5 assists. Meridiano Alicante's coach Kuko Cruza used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Lithuanian Paulius Vaitiekunas (204-92) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds and American center Michael Mayer (205-92, college: Williams, agency: Duran International) added 12 points respectively for the guests. Meridiano Alicante moved-up to fifth place. Azpeitia lost tenth consecutive game. They keep the fourteenth position with 18 games lost. Meridiano Alicante will have a break next round. Azpeitia will play at home against Fuenlabrada (#8) and hope to win that game.
