There was no surprise when 9th ranked Le Portel (14-13) was defeated on the road by second ranked Hyeres-Toulon (21-6) 91-77 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 4 points at the halftime before their 55-37 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Hyeres-Toulon forced 19 Le Portel turnovers. Strangely Le Portel outrebounded Hyeres-Toulon 38-23 including 27 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American forward Kyle Spain (196-87, college: San Diego St.) who scored 24 points and 7 rebounds. The former international point guard Axel Julien (185-92, agency: Comsport) chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international Gary Chathuant (192-83) who recorded 26 points and American center Jakim Donaldson (203-83, college: Edinboro) added 16 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Le Portel's coach Eric Girard gave the chance to play for ten players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Hyeres-Toulon. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Monaco. Loser Le Portel keeps the ninth place with 13 games lost. Hyeres-Toulon will face Denain Voltaire (#4) on the road in the next round. Le Portel will play against Boulazac Basket (#3) and hope to win that game.
