Second Stage Round 8: Nowa Sol - Polonia Bytom 87-80

There was a surprise result when ninth ranked Nowa Sol (6-10) defeated at home higher ranked Polonia Bytom (9-7) 87-80 on Saturday. Polonia Bytom was tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Nowa Sol made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. Strangely Polonia Bytom outrebounded Nowa Sol 43-31 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. Polonia Bytom was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of Maciej Kucharek (204-93) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and Marek Zywert (187-96) who added 27 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) during the contest. Nowa Sol's coach used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Emil Podkowinski (194-88) responded with a double-double by scoring 32 points and 10 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and point guard Marcin Ecka (184-78) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Four Polonia Bytom players scored in double figures. Nowa Sol moved-up to seventh place in Group F, which they share with WKK Wroclaw and Suchy Las. Newly promoted Polonia Bytom keeps the fourth position with seven games lost. Nowa Sol will face WKK Wroclaw (#9) on the road in the next round. Polonia Bytom will play against Suchy Las (#7) and hope to win that game.
