Regular Season Round 51: Toyama Grouses - Sendai 89ers 75-69

There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Toyama Grouses (32-16) defeated at home 3rd placed Sendai 89ers (32-15) 75-69 on Sunday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Sendai 89ers won third quarter 29-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Toyama Grouses shot 17 for 28 from the free-throw line, while Sendai 89ers only scored one point from the stripe. They outrebounded Sendai 89ers 47-28 including 17 on the offensive glass. The best player for the winners was American center Joe Werner (201-84, college: Wisc.-La Crosse) who had a double-double by scoring 30 points and 17 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Sam Willard (205-88, college: Pacific) chipped in 7 points and 17 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Kejuan Johnson (193-85, college: Long Beach St., agency: Inception Sports) who recorded 28 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Takehiko Shimura (160-83) added 12 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Toyama Grouses moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Shiga L-Stars. Sendai 89ers at the other side dropped to the fourth position with 15 games lost. Toyama Grouses will face Fukushima (#7) at home in the next round. Sendai 89ers will play against Shinshu BW and hope to win that game.
