Not a big story in a game when 7th ranked Fukushima (19-31) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Toyama Grouses (34-16) 75-59 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Toyama Grouses. Fukushima managed to win second period 22-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Fukushima 55-29 including a 23-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. American players dominated the game. Center Joe Werner (201-84, college: Wisc.-La Crosse) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 24 rebounds for the winners and forward Sam Willard (205-88, college: Pacific) chipped in 11 points, 24 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Toyama Grouses players scored in double figures. Center James Hughes (211-83, college: N.Illinois, agency: I.D.S. Law) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and guard Verdell Jones III (195-89, college: Indiana) scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. The victory was the third consecutive win for Toyama Grouses. They maintain fifth place with 34-16 record. Newly promoted Fukushima keeps the seventh position with 31 games lost. They share it with Shinshu BW. Toyama Grouses will meet Gunma (#9) on the road in the next round. Fukushima will play against Shinshu BW and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
