Hapoel Jerusalem used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Ashdod 91-76 on Sunday night. The hosts trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 46-28 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Hapoel Jerusalem dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Maccabi Ashdod's 30. Strangely Maccabi Ashdod outrebounded Hapoel Jerusalem 41-29 including 17 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) fired 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners (made all of his eight free throws). The former international Yotam Halperin (195-84) chipped in 18 points and 4 assists. American center Mickell Gladness (211-86) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 17 rebounds and the other American import point guard Diante Garrett (196-88, college: Iowa St.) added 17 points and 6 assists respectively for lost side. Four Hapoel Jerusalem and five Maccabi Ashdod players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Hapoel Jerusalem will meet at home Hapoel Holon in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Maccabi Ashdod will play against Ironi Nahariya and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
