Everything went according to plan in Veracruz where top-ranked Abejas (4-0) edged bottom-ranked Halcones Rojos (0-4) 84-82 on Friday. Halcones Rojos were tied after three quarters but could not keep up in the last quarter eventually losing the game. Abejas made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Abejas outrebounded Halcones Rojos 39-27 including 24 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Jamaican forward McHugh Mattis (198-84, college: S.Florida) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds and the former international point guard Steve Monreal (180-86, college: CS Monterey) who added 14 points and 10 rebounds during the contest. Four Abejas players scored in double figures. At the losing side international forward Marco Ramos (198-87, college: Grand Canyon) responded with 15 points and 5 rebounds and American guard Daniel Bejarano (193-91, college: Colorado St.) scored 16 points. Halcones Rojos' coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Abejas have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 4-0 record, which they share with Fuerza Regia and Pioneros. Loser Halcones Rojos still closes the standings with four games lost. Abejas will face Correcaminos (#9) in Ciudad Victoria in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Halcones Rojos will play on the road against Gigantes in Toluca and hope to get finally their first victory.
