Regular Season Round 8: CREF Hola - Gipuzkoa UPV 42-61

There was a minor upset when 9th ranked CREF Hola (3-5) was smashed by twelfth ranked Gipuzkoa UPV (3-5) in Madrid 61-42 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Gipuzkoa UPV. CREF Hola was better in fourth quarter 18-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding CREF Hola to just 6 points in first quarter and to 14 points in first half. Gipuzkoa UPV made 17-of-21 free shots (81.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 CREF Hola turnovers. American center Cierra Bravard (193-89, college: Florida St., agency: Josep and Nicolas) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 18 rebounds and 4 assists. Point guard Maria Gomez (170-82) contributed with 12 points for the winners. American center Shakeya Leary (189-90, college: Syracuse) replied with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 11 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and her fellow American import forward Lyndra Weaver (185-87, college: Virginia) added 7 points and 13 rebounds in the effort for CREF Hola. Gipuzkoa UPV moved-up to ninth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated CREF Hola. CREF Hola lost third consecutive game. Gipuzkoa UPV will face higher ranked Conquero (#4) in Huelva in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
