A1 top team - AEK Athens (5-0) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat thirteenth ranked Kavala (1-4) 80-72. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 28-21. But Kavala won second period 21-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The former international center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84) nailed a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side and American swingman Malik Hairston (198-87, college: Oregon) accounted for 16 points. Four AEK Athens players scored in double figures. American forward Rob Jones (196-89, college: St.Mary's, CA) came up with 22 points and 5 rebounds and Bulgarian Chavdar Kostov (195-88, agency: Interperformances) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Kavala in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. AEK Athens have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 5-0 record, which they share with Panathinaikos. Kavala lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with 5 other teams. AEK Athens will meet at home Apollon Patras (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game.
