Regular Season Round 9: Henan - Shandong 79-58

Bottom-ranked Shandong (0-9) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 79-58 loss to fifth ranked Henan (3-6) in Jiyuan on Saturday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Henan. Shandong was better in second period 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Shandong to just 7 points in first and third quarters. Henan made 30-of-34 free shots (88.2 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Shandong 41-21 including a 28-9 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American forward Tianna Hawkins (191-91, college: Maryland) who scored 9 points and 19 rebounds. Forward Yang Wang (182-90) chipped in 16 points and 9 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international power forward Xiao Ji (193-85) who recorded 16 points and point guard Jie Yu (178-88) added 14 points respectively. Henan maintains fifth place with 3-6 record, which they share with Liaoning. Newly promoted Shandong still closes the standings with nine games lost. Henan will face league's second-placed Shanghai Dahua on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Shandong will play against the league's leader Guangdong Dolphins (#1) in Guangzhou and looks forward to get finally their first victory.
