There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Barcelona (0-7) was defeated at home by eleventh ranked Almeria (2-5) 63-47 on Saturday. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Almeria's pressure prevailed and they won that period 24-10 extending their advantage to 16 points. Almeria outrebounded Barcelona 39-21 including a 24-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. Jamaican center Tajay Ashmeade (190-89, college: Seton Hall) fired a double-double by scoring 13 points and 18 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Alicia Gonzalez (187-86) chipped in 16 points and 5 rebounds. Power forward Claudia Baraut (185-94) produced 14 points and 5 rebounds and forward Maria Moreno (181-84) added 10 points respectively for lost side. Barcelona's coach let to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Almeria maintains eleventh place in Group B with 2-5 record. Barcelona lost their seventh game in a row. Newly promoted team still closes the standings with seven games lost. Almeria will face higher ranked ASEFA Estudiantes (#3) in Madrid in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Barcelona will play on the road against the league's second-placed Sant Adria (#2) having rather not much hope for a victory.
