The game in Melbourne supposed to be also quite interesting. 5th ranked Bendigo Spirit (6-5) played at the court of seventh ranked Boomers (4-6). Boomers did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 78-58 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 78-58. Boomers outrebounded Bendigo Spirit 40-28 including a 29-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for the former international center Elyse Penaluna (193-88) who led her team to a victory scoring 25 points and 7 rebounds. American guard Brittany Smart (175-85, college: Cedarville) helped adding 14 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. At the losing side international center Gabrielle Richards (191-84, college: Oregon) responded with 14 points and 9 rebounds and American forward Kelsey Griffin (188-87, college: Nebraska) scored 9 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Boomers maintains seventh place with 4-6 record. Loser Bendigo Spirit keeps the fifth position with five games lost. Boomers will face bottom-ranked Canberra Capitals (#9) on the road in the next round. Bendigo Spirit will play against Adelaide Lightning (#8) and hope to win that game.
