Regular Season Round 8: Wildcats - Breakers 86-80

The game between Top Four teams took place in Perth. Second ranked host Perth Wildcats (9-4) defeated one of their biggest challengers New Zealand Breakers (7-5) 86-80. 86-80. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of New Zealand Breakers. It looked good early as New Zealand Breakers took a 2-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Perth Wildcats had a 28-15 second period charge getting the lead and New Zealand Breakers were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 80-86. Perth Wildcats dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to New Zealand Breakers' 40 and made 21-of-24 charity shots (87.5 percent) during the game. The winners were led by American guard Jermaine Beal (191-87, college: Vanderbilt) who scored that evening 19 points and the other American import forward Casey Prather (196-91, college: Florida) supported him with 18 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Four Perth Wildcats players scored in double figures. Perth Wildcats' coach Trevor Gleeson allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 15 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists by American guard Cedric Jackson (191-86, college: Cleveland St.) did not help to save the game for New Zealand Breakers. New Zealand guard Corey Webster (188-88, college: Lambuth, agency: Beo Basket) added 23 points for the guests. Perth Wildcats have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 9-4 record behind leader United. Defending champion New Zealand Breakers keep the third place with five games lost. Perth Wildcats will play against Adelaide 36ers (#4) in Findon in the next round. New Zealand Breakers will play on the road against Townsville Crocodiles in Wulguru and hope to get back on the winning track.
