Regular Season Round 10: Maccabi Haifa - Hapoel J-M 84-86 OT

Maccabi Haifa (#6) forced the game against Hapoel Jerusalem (#1) into an overtime, but lost by two points 84-86 on Friday night. The game took place in Haifa. But the guests from Jerusalem were better at the end. The guests trailed by 7 points at the halftime before their 23-12 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to tie the game at the end of regular time. They were better in overtime eventually winning that period 9-7. Hapoel Jerusalem forced 19 Maccabi Haifa turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Hapoel Jerusalem made 9 blocks. Maccabi Haifa was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. American-Venezuelan Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC) had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals to lead the charge for the winners and international forward Lior Eliyahu (205-85) chipped in 11 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists during the contest. Hapoel Jerusalem's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American swingman Rene Rougeau (198-86, college: UNLV, agency: Pro Sports) responded with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds and Venezuelan point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Pro Sports) scored 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. They have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 8-2 record. Maccabi Haifa at the other side keeps the sixth place with five games lost. Hapoel Jerusalem will face Bnei Hasharon (#4) in Hod Hasharon in the next round. Maccabi Haifa will play at home against Maccabi Ashdod and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
