Regular Season Round 10: Hawks - Taipans 97-82

Date: December 9, 2015
Everything went according to plan when fourth ranked Illawarra Hawks (8-7) defeated 7th ranked Cairns Taipans (6-9) in Gwynneville 97-82 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Illawarra Hawks. Cairns Taipans was better in second period 25-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Illawarra Hawks made 24-of-29 free shots (82.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a very good performance for the former international center Andrew James Ogilvy (211-88, college: Vanderbilt) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 9 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws). New Zealand swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin, agency: Duran International) contributed with 24 points for the winners. Illawarra Hawks' coach Rob Beveridge used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American point guard Markel Starks (188-91, college: Georgetown) replied with 19 points and the former international swingman Stephen Weigh (198-87) added 17 points in the effort for Cairns Taipans. Five Illawarra Hawks and four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Illawarra Hawks have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 8-7 record. Cairns Taipans at the other side dropped to the sixth place with nine games lost. Illawarra Hawks will face higher ranked New Zealand Breakers (#3) in Auckland in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Cairns Taipans will play at home against the league's leader Perth Wildcats and hope to win that game.
