The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Al Rayyan as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Al Rayyan smashed 6th ranked Al Shamal in Doha 88-48. The game was mostly controlled by Al Rayyan. Al Shamal managed to win third quarter 20-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American point guard Dominic James (180-86, college: Marquette) scored 28 points and 4 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) to lead the charge for the winners and the former international forward Tanguy Ngombo (197-84) chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Four Al Rayyan players scored in double figures. Al Rayyan's coach Stergios Koufos felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American-Nigerian power forward Alvin Mofunanya (203-87, college: Fair Dickinson) with 14 points and Abdul Kosar scored 12 points and 5 rebounds. Al Rayyan (5-0) have an impressive five-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Al Sadd. Al Shamal lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh place with four games lost. They share the position with Qatar and Al Arabi. Al Shamal will play next round against strong Al Sadd trying to get back on the winning streak. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha - Al Sadd. Al Rayyan will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Al Wakrah on the road.
