Regular Season Round 11: Viareggio - Empoli 53-63

There was no surprise when 11th ranked Viareggio (3-8) was defeated at home by ninth ranked Empoli (5-6) 63-53 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 63-53. Empoli dominated on the defensive end, holding Viareggio to just 6 points in second quarter. Strangely Viareggio outrebounded Empoli 40-13 including a 27-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Viareggio was plagued by 32 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for Francesca Fabbri (175-88) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 steals (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). Guard Francesca Rosellini (176-90) helped adding 18 points. Center Elena Bindelli (180-90) responded with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 12 rebounds and guard Federica Iannucci (175-93) scored 16 points and 5 rebounds. Viareggio's coach let to play ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Despite that victory Empoli went down to tenth position (A2) due to points difference. Viareggio at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the eleventh place with eight games lost. Empoli will face Brindisi (#13) at home in the next round. Viareggio will play against Palermo and hope to win that game.
