Not a big story in a game in Tenerife where 16th ranked CAI Zaragoza (2-8) was defeated by fourteenth ranked CB Canarias (4-6) 82-78 on Sunday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-14. But CAI Zaragoza won second period 19-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when CB Canarias won last quarter 22-20. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Argentinian-Italian point guard Nicolas Richotti (183-86) scored 33 points (!!!) and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Tim Abromaitis (203-89, college: Notre Dame) chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side Dutch center Henk Norel (214-87) responded with 22 points and 5 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field) and international point guard Tomas Bellas (185-90) scored 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Four CAI Zaragoza players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. CB Canarias moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser CAI Zaragoza keeps the sixteenth position with eight games lost. CB Canarias will face bottom-ranked Gipuzkoa (#18) in San Sebastian in the next round where they are favorite. CAI Zaragoza will play at home against Unicaja Malaga and hope to win that game.
