A very close game took place in Sao Paulo between Universo/Vitoria and Vivo/Franca. Eleventh ranked Universo/Vitoria (4-7) got a very close victory on the road over higher ranked Vivo/Franca (5-6). Universo/Vitoria managed to escape with a 2-point win 78-76 on Thursday evening. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. The winners were led by Spanish Alvaro Calvo (202-83, agency: Dynamics Global Management) who scored that evening 25 points and 7 rebounds and American guard Jason Smith (183-83, college: Al.-Huntsville) supported him with 21 points and 4 assists. Even 17 points and 8 rebounds by center Douglas Kurtz (213-87, college: Hawaii) did not help to save the game for Vivo/Franca. Isaac Goncalves (196-90) added 19 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Newly promoted Universo/Vitoria maintains eleventh position with 4-7 record. Vivo/Franca lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth place with six games lost. They share the position with B.Cearense. Universo/Vitoria will meet at home Caxias do Sul (#14) in the next round. Vivo/Franca will play against Liga Sorocaba (#15) in Sorocabana and hope to secure a win.
