No shocking result in a game in Las Palmas where fourth ranked Gernika (9-4) defeated 13th ranked Gran Canaria (4-9) 85-75 on Saturday. Gran Canaria was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 31-17 charge of Gernika, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Gran Canaria to just 7 points in second quarter. Gernika forced 26 Gran Canaria turnovers. Gran Canaria was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Romanian forward Claudia Pop (182-89, agency: Josep and Nicolas) fired 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Naiara Diez (181-87, agency: Regeneracom Sports) chipped in 17 points. Czech forward Michaela Stejskalova (186-87) produced 21 points and 6 rebounds and forward Estela Royo (178-86) added 19 points and 5 steals respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. The victory was the third consecutive win for Gernika. Gran Canaria will play at home against Azkoitia (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
