Regular Season Round 23: Pioneros - Abejas 89-86

Sixth-ranked Abejas (7-11) gave a tough game to second ranked Pioneros (17-2) in Cancun on Sunday. Pioneros managed to secure only three-point victory 89-86. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 4 points after three quarters before their 29-22 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Pioneros outrebounded Abejas 46-32 including 18 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Pioneros made 7 blocks. It was a great evening for the former international center Joaquin Villanueva (207-86) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 13 rebounds. The former international swingman Romel Beck (201-82, college: UNLV, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. American forward Travis Franklin (200-88, college: Colorado St.) responded with 21 points and 7 rebounds and the former international point guard Steve Monreal (180-86, college: CS Monterey) scored 18 points and 5 rebounds. Five Pioneros and four Abejas players scored in double figures. Pioneros have an impressive series of thirteen victories in a row. They maintain second place with 17-2 record having seven points less than leader Soles. Abejas at the other side keep the sixth position with 11 games lost. Pioneros are again looking forward to face Abejas (#6) in Guanajuato in the next round. Abejas will have a break next round.
