There was no surprise in Gwynneville where 5th ranked New Zealand Breakers (11-10) were defeated by third ranked Illawarra Hawks (14-8) 87-69 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Illawarra Hawks. New Zealand Breakers was better in fourth quarter 21-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Illawarra Hawks made 26-of-34 free shots (76.5 percent) during the game. Illawarra Hawks outrebounded New Zealand Breakers 46-34 including a 24-13 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illawarra Hawks made 9 blocks. New Zealand Breakers were plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was New Zealand swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin, agency: Duran International) who scored 28 points (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). American-Italian guard Kevin Lisch (188-86, college: St.Louis) chipped in 16 points and 8 rebounds. Four Illawarra Hawks players scored in double figures.
