Regular Season Round 14: Townsville - Canberra 97-83

Bottom-ranked Canberra Capitals (0-19) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 97-83 loss to fourth ranked Townsville Fire (12-6) in Townsville. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. The game was mostly controlled by Townsville Fire. Canberra Capitals was better in second period 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Townsville Fire dominated down low during the game scoring 68 of its points in the paint compared to Canberra Capitals' 44. They outrebounded Canberra Capitals 40-26 including a 30-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Townsville Fire players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists. The former international center Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-80) notched 37 points (!!!) to lead the effort and American guard Natalie Novosel (180-89, college: Notre Dame, agency: LBM Management) supported her with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Townsville Fire players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds by American forward Denesha Stallworth (190-92, college: Kentucky, agency: LBM Management) did not help to save the game for Canberra Capitals. Her fellow American import point guard Renee Montgomery (170-86, college: Connecticut, agency: LBM Management) added 20 points and 8 assists for the guests. Defending champion moved-up to second place. Canberra Capitals at the other side still closes the standings. Townsville Fire's next round opponent will be Sydney Uni Flames (#5) at home. Canberra Capitals will play against Adelaide Lightning (#8) and hope to get finally their first victory.
