Regular Season Round 20: Barons Riga - Valmiera 63-81

There was no surprise when 9th ranked Barons Riga (5-15) was defeated at home by second ranked Valmiera (15-5) 81-63. It looked good early as Barons Riga took a 6-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Valmiera had a 20-7 second period charge getting the lead and Barons Riga was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 63-81. Valmiera dominated on the defensive end, holding Barons Riga to just 6 points in fourth quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Barons Riga's 22. Valmiera players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Barons Riga's players. The winners were led by the former international Arturs Berzins (204-88) who scored that evening 20 points and 6 assists and the former international forward Aigars Skele (192-92) supported him with 13 points and 5 assists. Four Valmiera players scored in double figures. Valmiera's coach Ainars Zvirgzdins used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 17 points by guard Arturs Ausejs (190-90) did not help to save the game for Barons Riga. Power forward Roberts Freimanis (201-91, college: Liepaja-2) added 13 points and 7 rebounds for the hosts. Valmiera have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 15-5 record having just two points less than leader Ventspils. Barons Riga lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 15 games lost. Valmiera's next round opponent will be Jurmala (#5) at home. Barons Riga will play against Jelgava (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
