Regular Season Round 23: Valmiera - Valka/Valga 75-76

Important game to mention about took place in Valmiera. Eighth ranked Valka/Valga (7-6) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging second-ranked Valmiera (17-6) 76-75 on Friday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the home team. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Valmiera. It looked good early as Valmiera took a 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Valka/Valga took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 1 point. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. The former international center Jurijs Aleksejevs (202-85) saved the victory with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Martins Berkis (198-85) contributed with 18 points for the winners. The former international Martins Laksa (200-90) answered with 21 points and the former international Arturs Berzins (204-88) added 12 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Valmiera. Five Valka/Valga and four Valmiera players scored in double figures. Valmiera's coach Ainars Zvirgzdins tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Valka/Valga moved-up to seventh place. Valmiera at the other side keeps the second position with six games lost. Valka/Valga will play against higher ranked VEF Riga (#6) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Valmiera will play against Liepaja/Triobet (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
