Regular Season Round 19: Empoli - San Pietro 55-45

There was a surprise result when seventh ranked Empoli (10-9) won against at home 3rd placed San Pietro (13-6) 55-45 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Empoli. San Pietro was better in second period 14-8. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Empoli won last quarter 15-7. They dominated on the defensive end, holding San Pietro to just 6 points in first quarter. Empoli held San Pietro to an opponent 24.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 28.8 percent accuracy of the winners. Empoli forced 27 San Pietro turnovers. San Pietro was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for guard Nadia Calamai (172-86) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 8 rebounds. Czech center Klara Pochobradska (186-89) contributed with 15 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Forward Carlotta Gianolla (181-97) answered with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds and Israeli point guard Federica Franceschelli (180-97) added 10 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for San Pietro. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Empoli maintains seventh place in A2 with 10-9 record. San Pietro at the other side keeps the third position with six games lost. Empoli will face Castellammare (#9) in Stabia in the next round. San Pietro will play at home against Ancona (#14) and hope to win that game.
