Regular Season Round 20: Santiago - Guantanamo 81-85

Date: February 17, 2016
The game in Santiago was also worth to mention about. Sixth ranked Guantanamo (7-10) played at the court of 8th ranked Santiago (5-12). Guantanamo managed to secure a 4-point victory 85-81. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Santiago. Guantanamo shot 30 for 46 from the free-throw line, while Santiago only scored thirteen points from the stripe. Strangely Santiago outrebounded Guantanamo 41-26 including a 26-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. Santiago was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The winners were led by swingman Elvis Pons (194-83) who scored that evening 25 points and 8 rebounds and the former international swingman Yoannis Soria (195-86) supported him with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Even a double-double of 12 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocks by Eddy Hechevarria (193-86) did not help to save the game for Santiago. International forward Esteban Martinez (192-87) added 24 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Santiago's coach Lazaro Guibot tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Guantanamo moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Camaguey. Santiago at the other side stay at the bottom position with 12 games lost. Guantanamo will play against Pinar (#6) in Rio in the next round. Santiago will play at home against the league's second-placed Ciego and hopes to get back on the winning track.
