Regular Season Round 23: Flamengo - Universo/Vitoria 101-53

Leader Flamengo delivered the eighteenth victory on Saturday night. This time they crushed 13th ranked Universo/Vitoria (6-16) 101-53 in Rio de Janeiro. The game without a history. Flamengo led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Universo/Vitoria's 30. They outrebounded Universo/Vitoria 45-33 including 32 on the defensive glass. Flamengo looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by Universo/Vitoria's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Flamengo made 7 blocks. It was a great evening for the former international forward Olivinha Rodriguez (203-83) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds. The former international Marcelo Machado (201-75, agency: Interperformances) helped adding 18 points and 5 assists. Four Flamengo players scored in double figures. American guard Jason Smith (183-83, college: Al.-Huntsville) responded with 16 points and Spanish Alvaro Calvo (202-83, agency: Dynamics Global Management) scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion maintains first place with 18-4 record. Universo/Vitoria lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the thirteenth position with 16 games lost. They share it with Caxias do Sul. Flamengo will meet Caxias do Sul (#14) on the road in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Universo/Vitoria will have a break next round.
